1. OSU SME The officer elections meeting

The officer elections (2023-2024) is in the corner. Involvement in OSU SME leadership offers high-achieving, motivated students with opportunities for professional development and networking, nationally-competitive scholarships, factory tours, design challenges, conferences, and free student membership with Oregon SME (professional chapter) sponsorship. 

If you are interested in becoming an officer, contact the club's chair ([email protected]) or faculty advisor ([email protected]). Self-nominations are highly encouraged. A number of positions are available.

2. SME 2023 Digital Manufacturing Challenge

Each year, SME organizes Digital Manufacturing Challenge with objective to inspire the next generation of engineer to go beyond the classroom or laboratory to deploy engineering design and manufacturing solutions to address to real world challenges. 

This year challenge "AM to the Rescue: Digital Manufacturing Agility to Address Crises" is seeking to solutions to address natural or man-made disasters – circumstances where our fellow human beings are made homeless. Consider one, some or all of the following: 
[1] Shelter(Individual or multi-family), 
[2] Medical supplies/devices/facilities prioritizing the urgent/important needs, 
[3] Manufacturing facilities as an economic engine of restoration and prosperity by and for all from mercantile to industrial scale.

3. ASME/SME Student Manufacturing Design Competition

The competition is open for any system, component, or process design that can be used to promote the art, science, and practice of manufacturing engineering. Any creative new way to make things is welcome. Also, a working prototype will not necessarily have been completed by the time of the submission. Such projects will be judged based on the design and analysis of the concept.

The proposal must be submitted in electronic form submitted and received by April 1, 2023. The First Prize: is $1000, the Second Prize: is $750, Third Prize: is $500

Job Opportunities
  • Research Assistant/Technical Analyst: The OSU Energy Efficiency Center (EEC) is looking for motivated student energy/technical analysts to work part-time during the school year (10-12 hrs/week) and during the summer (30-40 hrs/week). Student teams advised by engineering faculty visit manufacturers and seek ways to increase their productivity and reduce energy use and waste. Resources/Seminars

  • SME Direct Digital Manufacturing Advisory Teamorganize the two-part seminar series. The seminar will cover the fundamentals of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T). They are free of charge, and available on demand. Register Part I, Part II.

  • College of Engineering (COE) offers several supports, such as

    • Drop in and appointment COE Peer Tutoring for undergraduate students.

    • COE Programming Helpdesk.

    • Wellness resource: It’s Okay Not to Be Okay, COE has a new Wellness Coordinator and Counselor, Shannon Frasca; drop-in hours every Wednesday from 1–3 pm in Johnson Hall 114 or schedule a consultation here.

    • Professional support. If you are looking to get career advice, COE Career Development Center can support you. The center is located at 124 Johnson Hall, with drop-in advising hours (in-person or virtual) and a resume.
