Who We Are
The Oregon State Human Powered Submarine Team (HPS) is a group of student engineers, scientists, creatives, and visionaries who are brought together by a shared goal to start something new together. Our goal is to be the first Oregon team to compete in the International Submarine Races, a biennial competition where teams from all over the world design, build, and race their submarines made entirely from scratch, and powered solely by a SCUBA breathing pilot inside.
Our Purpose
The purpose of the Oregon State Human Powered Submarine Team (HPS) is to facilitate a multifaceted project for students in all academic disciplines. This project encompasses the learning and implementation of hydrodynamics, electronics, composite materials, physics, machining, and administration. It creates an opportunity for hands-on learning and project development.
Team Structure
Our club is divided into four main design subgroups and one dive team; the design groups are hull, propulsion, steering, and emergency systems. Hull is tasked with the design and manufacturing of the submarine's main body, propulsion with the drive train and propellers, steering with the fins and their actuators, and emergency systems with all the components that keep the pilot safe. The dive team trains under OSU's scientific diving program to get physically prepared for accompanying the submarine at the races.
