Satiation and Satisfaction by Roop:

Roop describes satisfaction as that feeling when you take the first bite of your favorite slice of pizza and feel happy with the food. Roop then says you will notice satiation at the end of your meal. When you eat your meal, pause and listen to your body’s cues about ¾ of the way through the meal.

Amy Frazier’s “Feeding Yourself with Intuitive Eating”

“Intuitive eating is a self-care eating framework that integrates instinct, emotion and rational thought into the process of eating (wisdom).”  Intuitive eating is an evidence-based framework to help us rebuild a connection to our body, cultivating attunement to our bodies.

Honor your hunger

It is important to keep your body biologically fed. When you don't feed yourself when you are hungry, this is a restriction. Our body wants to override this restriction, sometimes this means overconsumption to make up for this restriction. Trust the cues you have around hunger.

Feel your fullness

How attuned are we to listening to our signals when we are no longer hungry or beginning to feel hungry. Trust ourselves to have permission around food.

Amy shared a tool to help us evaluate our bodies' signals telling us if we are thirsty, hungry, full, sleepy, sick, rested, stressed. Where in your body do you feel these signals. (Signals may be noticed in your head, eyes, mouth, or stomach.) After you recognize how your body is telling you what your needs are, how does this sensation feel? Is it a pleasant feeling?

Sometimes it is challenging to recognize these signals. We have these skills but we may have practice reconnecting with these attunement pieces.

How do we make our food choices?

Food choices may be based on nutrition and health. However, there are many other reasons that dictate our food choices. Ethics, culture, price and availability, body types (allergies) traditions, Tastes, social reasons. These are all valid reasons for food choices.

Honor your health: gentle nutrition

Although nutrition is valuable, you don’t have to eat perfectly. This structure values recognizing bo

2200 residents

The dining halls are open for residents and students attending the campus.

Safety measures: only have about 100 people allowed into the dining hall at a time. There is no in-house dining and rather served as take out. They have available seating outside. Masks are required in the dining centers. Service is working to be much quicker and ultimately reducing customization. The options will still meet dietary needs but lower variety. They are working on continuing their values, by serving a variety of dietary needs. They are serving students with dietary restrictions and work to have inclusive menus to serve all students on campus.

They included a symbol, labeling foods as immunity boosting. There are also dietary request forms to allow residents to access foods that are appropriate for their dietary needs.

Makes sense meals: Low cost, nutritionally balanced meals - $4.70

Food for Thought: The production kitchen will overproduce foods some days. They sell these meals for $3.70

Students that are registered as food insecure through HSRC may get the Food for Through meals for free.

Emily works at HSRC. It is a center to support students to receive their basic needs such as housing, food, She gave us a tour of the Champinefu Lodge on campus and the new system during COVID. They have a production garden growing produce. They have a tent on the back of the building so that they can still serve students during COVID. HSRC will take information about the visitor and HRSC employees will pack up a bag of groceries for the visitors. HRSC is working to include fresh fruits and vegetables.

HRSC is also doing a program called “Healthy Beaver Bags.” They will do a cooking class over zoom. Participants can pick up a grocery bag with the ingredients from Champinefu Lodge on Fridays, from Noon till 2:30. Miguel Arellano Sanchez, the Basic Needs Navigator, will assist students to help them find resources for their needs. HRSC in

Food access

They are shifting towards calling their program grocery support to allow students to feel that they are eligible to receive this resource. Food insecurity is not always a clear definition and students may not feel “food insecure” but are still having to make decisions between the foods they need and other basic needs.
