In February, nine members of the OSU Students of Information Management (SIM) club paired up with mentors in industry to volunteer for National Engineers Month Outreach Program. SIM club students worked with the Portland chapter of Society for Information Management to organize the event, bringing together leaders in the IT industry and 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes. The goal was to provide interesting information on exciting opportunities related to information technology and engineering, and to capture the attention of young students and encourage their interest in mathematics and science.
The student SIM club members described a variety of jobs available for IT and IS professionals such as video game creation, medical technologies, website creation, hand-held electronic devices, and more. Industry professionals including Mark Van Patten, director of the college’s Business Solutions Group; and Robel Tadesse, CIO for the City of Corvallis, also participated and shared how IT/IS makes an impact in today's world.
